Floridian Distracted Drivers Responsible for over 50k Crashes

According to recent statistics by the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Florida distracted drivers are at an all-time high. In fact, last year alone, they were responsible for over 50,000 crashes. Experts think that number is actually quite higher.

About Vehicle Crashes

It can be shocking after an accident to learn how expensive, time-consuming and frustrating the process can be. For many, pain does not present itself at the scene of the accident, however, the debilitating pain begins a day or two later. This can be difficult for many Americans who do not have health insurance or disability insurance.  Therefore, it can be difficult to receive medical attention or income while out of work.

Florida Distracted Driving Second-Highest in Country

Florida is the second highest in the country for distracted drivers according to the EverDrive motion-sensing app. The app logged 2.7 million vehicle trips and 230 million miles driven. Then, it scored drivers on measured speed, sudden acceleration, aggressive turning, hard braking, and other movements while the driver used his or her phone while driving.

Florida is one of only five states where police cannot pull over a driver specifically for texting while driving.  According to the state department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were almost 50,000 crashes involving distracted driving last year. This equals more than five crashes every hour. Examples of distracted driving include texting, eating, checking your GPS, unsecured pets, adjusting the radio, tending to kids in the back seat, and even daydreaming. Distracted driving crashes accounted for more than 3,500 serious injuries and 233 deaths. However, Florida Highway Patrol thinks these numbers are much higher since people don’t volunteer distracted driving phone use after a crash.

Just last month, a distracted driver crashed into a group of 14 bicyclists in Davie, Florida. The driver claimed to not see any of the cyclists before hitting the group. One woman died and many other suffered injuries.
